About The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, often referred to as just Goodyear, is an American manufacturing company based in Akron, Ohio. Goodyear is well known for their various tire products that serve automobiles, commercial trucks, motorcycles, SUVs, aircraft, farm equipment, and more. Goodyear was first established in 1898 when their first factory was opened in Akron. Originally, their products consisted of tires for bicycles and carriages, rubber horseshoe pads, and poker chips.
As the automobile industry began to take off in the early 1900’s with the invention of the Ford car, Goodyear began to produce racing tires for Henry Ford. During this time, Goodyear also began to join in partnerships with other companies, working with entities such as the Luftschiffbau Zeppelin Company to form joint ventures and develop products. In 1927, Goodyear went public on the New York Stock Exchange, holding its initial public offering. With new financial power, Goodyear began to expand their operations and soon became a multinational corporation.
As the United States started to shift towards the radial tire, Goodyear became one of the select few tire firms that came out on the other side as the machinery for such products proved to be very costly. Nevertheless, the company continued to grow financially, even furthering their expansion in international markets. During the late 1980’s and into the 1990’s, Goodyear began to diversify their operations to ensure continued success, and they began acquiring multiple companies within various market sectors.
The 1990’s served as the last period of major restructuring for Goodyear leading into the present, as it was at this time that they began to further expand into other markets and acquire businesses. Recently, Goodyear has begun to sell off some of their international plants due to a lack of competition, also announcing new partnerships and joint-ventures to further their operations.
